Treatment under conscious sedation
Conscious sedation is usually called sedation using the substance midazolam, administered per os, i.e. by mouth.
The child is fully conscious throughout the treatment. Midazolam has one main effect for us – forgetfulness. The child does not remember the treatment, and thus there is no trauma from the unpleasant procedure. Sometimes the tooth cannot be repaired and it must be extracted. This method of treatment is particularly suitable for these unpleasant but short procedures, such as extraction.
Midazolam sometimes also has calming effects, the child may be sleepy, but sometimes he laughs a lot, and sometimes it makes him laugh out loud. The effects are very individual, and the only certain effect is amnesia.
Unfortunately, the treatment cannot be expected to be calm, which is why this method is only suitable for short, quick procedures such as extractions or small, simple fillings.
How does the whole treatment work?
- We begin with a joint consultation and examination of the child. This is very important so that we have sufficient information about your child and you receive sufficient information from us.
- We will propose the method of treatment (including whether conscious sedation is suitable for your child) and prepare a treatment and cost plan. If you agree with our plan, you can schedule the procedure.
- The child will be given a syrup to drink (unfortunately, it does not taste good, but it is only a few milliliters). After approximately 20–30 minutes, the treatment itself will begin.
- During the procedure, the child sits on your lap. Due to the often unpleasant nature of the procedures, it is necessary to hold the child. The child remains conscious the entire time, protective reflexes are preserved, and the child may often resist the treatment. It is important to take this into account.
- After the procedure, you will remain under observation for approximately 1.5 hours so the child can rest. The child is then discharged to home care with a recommendation for rest under your supervision.
We take care of uncooperative children
- We begin with a joint consultation and examination of the child. This is very important so that we have sufficient information about your child and you receive sufficient information from us.
- We will take an X-ray if possible and if you do not already have one.
- We will propose the method of treatment and prepare a treatment and cost plan.
- You will receive all materials from us in digital form, so you will have access to them at any time and do not have to worry about losing any “papers.” If you agree with our plan, you can schedule the procedure itself.
